Paralympic Sports Association Membership

2017-2019

The Paralympic Sports Association (PSA) is a not for profit that provides adaptive recreation and sport programs in Alberta. They offer recreation and programs for children, youth, adults and seniors with physical and/or developmental disabilities.

As with most not for profits, there are not enough resources to provide services like data analysis and data visualization. I started volunteering with the organization in 2019 with a different program but saw an opportunity to support the organization with my skill set in data storytelling. PSA started gathering information in 2017 through online registrations for their programs. This is a look at their registrations from 2017-2019.

To start, I had conversations with the Executive Director to better understand their business, how their programs work and to understand what information would be useful or insightful for them. They’ve never really had the opportunity to visualize their data about their members so we started with the basics. I knew the final product would be in Tableau Public so we also had to ensure confidentiality with the data. There was also some data clean up that was required in order to get it to a place where we could make accurate charts and stats. Here are some of the sketches that I started with.

Once I went into Tableau, I started with the following ideas for the visualizations. The feedback that I received was to add more data labels, especially the locations chart - it was hard to read. There were also some data points that were initially counted in the data, that we removed as they were not an accurate reflection of the member group.

After further iterations and a better handle on the design and colour palette, this was the final product. I received really positive feedback from the PSA and they plan on using this information in their annual report.

It is also available on the Tableau Public site.
