City of Edmonton Population

As someone who was born and raised in Edmonton, I wanted to learn more about the population of the city. The City of Edmonton has a great open data portal with information from past census results. I took a look at the population by Ward and then by age group to see if certain age groups lived in certain parts of the city. Here’s what I found.

To start, I did some initial visualization in Tableau to see different breakdowns of the data to better understand what story I could tell. I manipulated the data to break it down into different age categories that were less broad and more specific.

I then took data from multiple years to show a year over year difference in population to tell a broader story. These are some of the sketches that I came up with.

These are some of the first translations of the sketches into Tableau. As you can see, it’s not as refined and wasn’t representing the story as well as I would like.

I continued to sketch and iterate in Tableau and finished with the following dashboard that looks at each Ward and then each Ward by age population.

You can also find the project on the Tableau Public site.
